“Five Bangladeshi fishermen were kidnapped two days ago while fishing. One of them was found dead,” said Jarin Tas Nimtason, Okiar Township Administrative Officer.

The remaining four fishermen are still unaccounted for, prompting efforts by the Bangladesh Border Guard and other agencies to locate them.

Conflicting Reports

Alleged Involvement of the Arakan Army (AA)

Bangladeshi media reported that six Bangladeshi nationals and two boats were intercepted by the Arakan Army (AA) in the Bay of Bengal while crossing the Nat River. The boats were said to be carrying construction materials toward St. Martin’s Island.

However, the AA has denied these allegations.

“On November 13, six Bangladeshi nationals were not arrested by the Arakan Army,” stated Khaing Thukha, AA’s spokesperson for news and information.

Post-Mortem Investigation

The body of Saidul Bashar has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Search Efforts for Missing Fishermen

Authorities have intensified search efforts to locate the remaining four fishermen. While local officials collaborate with the Bangladesh Border Guard, no significant progress has been reported.

Growing Concerns

Cross-Border Tensions

This incident highlights the escalating tensions along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, particularly in regions like the Bay of Bengal and Nat River, which often witness cross-border fishing activities.

Call for Action

Families of the missing fishermen and local communities are urging swift action to:

  • Recover the missing individuals.
  • Ensure accountability for the incident.
  • Strengthen cross-border cooperation to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The tragic death of Saidul Bashar and the continued disappearance of four fishermen underscore the pressing need for enhanced security and diplomatic resolution in the Nat River region. Authorities must work together to recover the missing fishermen and address the ongoing border issues impacting the safety of local fishing communities.
